A site survey should remove uncertainty before estimating begins

A useful security camera walkthrough documents more than proposed camera locations. It records what the customer needs to see, the conditions that affect image quality, the pathway and mounting work required, and every assumption that can change labor or material cost. The result should let an estimator build a proposal without guessing and let an installer understand why each design decision was made.

Begin with the customer's priorities. Ask what incidents they are trying to prevent or document, which people or vehicles must be identifiable, how long recordings must be retained, who will review video, and whether remote monitoring, audio, analytics or after-hours alerts are part of the expectation.

Coverage and evidenceEntrances, exits, transaction points, critical assets, vehicle approaches, loading areas and expected identification distance.

Turn field notes into a coordinated drawing

Photograph each proposed mounting area and pathway constraint, then name the photos so they correspond to the plan. On the drawing, give every camera a stable identifier and record its purposeβ€”not only its model. A camera intended for facial identification at an entrance has a different design requirement from an overview camera monitoring a warehouse aisle.
