Why Isn’t My Security Camera Seeing at Night?

Most modern security cameras use infrared (IR) LEDs to illuminate an area after dark. These LEDs produce light that is invisible to the human eye but allows the camera sensor to capture clear black-and-white images.

If your night vision suddenly stops working, the cause is often related to lighting conditions, dirty lenses, infrared reflections, hardware failures, or camera settings.

Common Symptoms

You may notice:

  • Black screen at night
  • Very dark nighttime image
  • Camera switches between day and night repeatedly
  • Washed-out white image
  • Night vision only works at short distances
  • One camera affected while others work normally

Common Causes

1. Dirty Camera Lens

Dust, fingerprints, insects, and spider webs can block or reflect infrared light back into the camera.

Clean the front glass carefully using a microfiber cloth and approved lens cleaner.

2. Infrared Reflection

Infrared LEDs can reflect off nearby objects, causing glare or a bright white image.

Common sources include:

  • Spider webs
  • Water droplets
  • Building walls
  • Gutters
  • Soffits
  • Signs
  • Pole mounts

Even a small spider web directly in front of the lens can dramatically reduce image quality.

3. Failed IR LEDs

Like any electronic component, infrared LEDs can eventually fail.

If the camera provides excellent daytime images but becomes nearly black at night, the IR illumination may no longer be functioning.

4. Poor Camera Placement

If the camera is mounted too close to a wall, ceiling, or overhang, infrared light may bounce back into the lens.

Relocating or adjusting the camera often improves nighttime performance.

5. Camera Settings

Some cameras allow infrared functions to be enabled or disabled manually.

Verify:

  • Day/Night Mode
  • Smart IR settings
  • Exposure settings
  • Image profiles

Incorrect configuration can reduce nighttime visibility.

6. Moisture or Lens Damage

Condensation inside the camera housing or a damaged front lens can scatter infrared light, creating blurry or hazy nighttime footage.

Troubleshooting Checklist

Before requesting service:

✅ Clean the camera lens.

✅ Remove spider webs and debris.

✅ Verify IR settings.

✅ Check for moisture.

✅ Inspect camera placement.

✅ Compare daytime and nighttime images.

✅ Test another camera in the same location if possible.

Why Does My Camera Look Fine During the Day?

Daytime images rely on available sunlight or ambient lighting.

At night, the camera depends on infrared illumination. If the IR system is obstructed or malfunctioning, the camera may still perform perfectly during daylight hours while producing poor nighttime footage.

Prevent Night Vision Problems

Routine inspections help identify:

  • Dirty lenses
  • Spider webs
  • Moisture intrusion
  • Failing infrared LEDs
  • Improper camera placement
  • Image quality issues

Preventative maintenance helps ensure reliable surveillance around the clock.

When to Call a Professional

Professional service is recommended if:

  • The camera remains dark after cleaning.
  • Infrared LEDs appear to have failed.
  • Moisture is visible inside the housing.
  • Camera placement cannot be adjusted safely.
  • Multiple cameras experience the same nighttime issue.

A technician can evaluate camera performance, inspect infrared operation, and recommend repair or replacement if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my security camera black at night?

The most common causes are failed infrared LEDs, dirty lenses, poor camera placement, or incorrect camera settings.

Why does my camera have a white glow at night?

This is usually caused by infrared light reflecting off dirt, spider webs, water droplets, or nearby objects positioned too close to the camera.

Do all security cameras switch to black and white at night?

Most infrared security cameras automatically switch to black-and-white mode in low-light conditions because it provides better nighttime sensitivity. Some newer cameras with supplemental white LEDs can maintain full-color night vision.

Can I replace the infrared LEDs?

On most commercial cameras, infrared LEDs are not designed to be replaced separately. If the IR hardware fails, replacing the camera is often the most practical solution.
